Late last year, we participated in a hospitality trade show here in Phnom Penh, showcasing for the first time ever the first working implementation of AVA Digital Concierge. While we did manage to raise some eyebrows with our existing features at the time, so too were we met with a barage of feature requests, the most interesting of which was raised by a kind gentleman from a well-known hotel group in the region. He asked, "Can AVA do more than just aggregate and display information? Can it actually think and make recommendations like a real concierge?" This question lingered in our minds long after the event had concluded.
In those days, we were already experimenting with ways to embrace what we like to call a "don't tell me where, bring me there" kind of hospitality. Our embrace of this came in the form of a customer-focused Chat app. The guest would simply pick a chat channel to raise their enquiry, and front desk officers could send them off to the right channel, should the guest mistakenly pick the wrong one. There is no need for the guest to act on instructions given by the agent.

As much as we assert our focus on designing good user interface, the activity of UI design in the first place is opinionated. It is actually impossible to do UI design without opinion. This means that UI is viewable as an instruction to the user, the abstraction layer that converts human action into meaning. This is semantics, and this semantics is defined by opinion and long-drawn hours of conversation between the designer and engineer. In order for AVA Digital Concierge to truly embrace our vision of hospitality, UI needs to be delivered, dynamically and on-demand, by an agent that knows the hotel inside and out.
As little as one year ago, the AI landscape was very different from what it is today. While natural language inference had significant impact on our ability to retrieve meaningful and compact information, technologies do not speak in natural language, and so it was difficult to build new technologies that leveraged the power of AI. With the advent of tooling, it is now possible not only to establish communication protocols between technologies through large language models, but also to do so at scale.
